JCC Cinema 32: Shodo Girls

Audience at the movie screening

The 32nd JCC Cinema screening of the Shodo Girls!! was held on Saturday, 16th May with whelming response. A warm and touching movie that portrays the teamwork, resilience and compassion of students when facing challenges in school, it was well received by our audience members. His Excellency Ambassador Haruhisa Takeuchi and Mrs Takeuchi were also present at the screening with the accompaniment of our Director, Ms Misako Ito.

Starring Riko Narumi and directed by Ryuichi Inomata, Shodo Girls!! is a movie with the Shodō Performance Kōshien as the background story, a performance calligraphy competition in Ehime Prefecture, Japan that combines traditional calligraphy with contemporary music and dance. It tells about how three high school girls were trying to overcome the membership crisis for their calligraphy club and later revived the depression-battered town by organising a performance calligraphy competition.

At the end of the screening, some of the audiences have enquired us about their desire to purchase the movie. We even received request from school that they are interested to borrow the movie for screening, as they believe firmly that their students can learn many more from the positive attitude and determination portrayed in the story.
